Organon:
The doctor’s sole object is to make the sick man well and
this word is called healing.
( After the 1st edition this 1st para was headed: the doctor’s
highest and only calling is to make sick man well , to cure , as
it is called)
The highest ideal of the healing art is a speedy gentle and
lasting restoration of health , or the removal and annihilation
of the malady in its entirety in the shortest, most dependable ,
least harmful way , on easily understandable principles
(rational healing)
- As far as the doctor is concerned disease means the totality
of their symptoms. The cause, which gives rise to the illness is
to be removed. A palliative treatment centered round one single
symptom should not be considered.
- Once all the
symptoms have been eradicated, the malady is cured in it’s
interior.
- Totality of symptoms is the only guide in the selection of the
medicine.
- This medicine should be capable of producing similar changes
in man.
- This power of medicines can only be observed in their effect
on healthy men.
- Human body is more inclined to change it’s condition by the
forces of medicine than by natural disease
- Two natural maladies occurring in the body together, do not
cancel one another when they are dissimilar. But if they are
similar, the stronger one extinguishes the weaker one.
These are the
possible ways of applying medicines for diseases:
1 .Homoeopathic.
2 .Allopathic or heteropathic
3 .Antipathic or enantiopathic. (palliative)
Maladies
are either a/c or c/c
Acute diseases are divided into- sporadic
epidemic, - those arising from acute miasms ,those produced by
excessive cold or heat, by violent impressions on the mind, etc.
Chronic diseases- all arise from c/c miasms .Most basic
cause of c/c disease is psora ,the rest by syphilis and sycosis
( figwart disease).
1. The first
requisite. for the true physician is accurate case taking.
2. The second requisite is the investigation of the pure
effects of medicines on healthy individuals, with special regard
to primary effect, secondary effect, alternating effect &
idiosyncrasies.
- Every medicine
differs from others in its action.
- Physician is the best prover . It should be proved on both
sexes.
- True M.M. can only be formed from proving drugs on healthy
human beings.
- Judicious application of the medicines.
- The most efficacious medicine is the most suitable one -it is
the specific remedy.
Cure of a/c
disease s is speedy, whereas in c/c it will take sufficient
time
-The more striking the symptoms are, more certainly the e
medicine can suit them.
- Cure takes place without much difficulties. The homoeopathic
aggravation is nothing more than a very similar medicinal malady
slightly more severe than the original.
- The external treatment of diseases having purely local
symptoms is always injurious.
- Mental diseases, intermittent diseases and intermittent fever
can be treated by homoeopathy.
- Methods of use and the instructions to the preparations and
preservations of homoeopathic remedies.
- Size of homoeopathic dose and ways of increasing potencies.
- The different parts of the body are more or less appropriate
for the reception of the remedy.
- Positive and negative employment of animal magnetism
(Mesmerism).
- Diet and regimen.
- For chronic diseases everything should be avoided that might
in anyway operate medicinally.
- Innocent stimulations of mind and body, exercise in open air,
suitable nutrition, on-medicinal food and drinks etc.
-In acute diseases palliatives with a soothing effect, if
desired by the patient should be permitted in moderation .The
temperature of the room should be arranged to the patient’s
likings. All mental efforts and disturbances of his spirit
should be withheld.
Six editions of
Organon were completed by the author himself. Five appeared
during his life, out which fourth is considered to be the
best, for too much space is taken up in the fifth edition with
the disputations with the”half—homoeopaths”.
COMPARISON of various editions of Organon:
1 .First edition included an introduction’ of 48pages, which
contains a review of the medical practice. Allopathy and
palliative cures of the old medical school up to that time and
detailed examples of’ spontaneous homoeopathic cures’ from the 4
edition this has grown to 104 pages.
2. First edition has 271 paragraphs on 222 pages.Fourth edition
has 292 paragraphs on 307 pages .Many paragraphs were completely
revised.
3. Two new paragraph about mesmerism in 4th edn
COMPARISON of fifth and sixth editions of Organon:
1. Aphrn.11 undergone alterations .Footnote answering “What is
dynamic influence and what is dynamic power?
2. Aphs .52-56 entirely re-modelled.
4 .56-57---Palliative treatment of individual symptoms.
5 .Aphs .60 & 74-- in footnotes explains his attitude towards
Broussas cure.
6.Aphs.148- diseases are always cured by a spirit like, hostile
agency. So we should administer an artificial potency as
similarly harmful to life as possible.
7,246-248---Abandoris single dose and wait method and recommends
to give medicines daily till the completion of cure from lower
degrees of potencies to higher in chronic diseases .Chronic
diseases yield more quickly under the effect of different
gradations of potencies than with repeated doses of the same
dilution.
8.248---How the individual doses are to be applied, diluted with
water for daily use in chronic diseases.
9 .265—-—Physicians should prepare and dispense medicines
themselves -
10 .269--- Footnote--seeks to explain dynamisation with
reference to other processes in the nature.
11 270---Techniques of preparations of triturations and
delusions ,according to centesimal system & globules
preparations.
12 .271-272---Preparations of potencies further described.
13 .273-—Use of double remedies-absolutely inadmissible.
14.276--Danger of too large or too frequently repeated doses is
described.
15.280—282——--Enlarge upon 247.
16 .282-Footnote-Requires large doses of medicines in the
treatment of psora, syphilis doses of their specific remedy is
to be taken daily, and. in case of need, several times a day and
the degree of dynamism should continually ascend.
17 284-Foot note importance of giving medicine for pregnant
women or during the suckling period in preventing the chronic
disease in infants, by inheritance.
First edition
of Organon when published(1810),is followed by serious
discussions. All criticisms are mainly against Hahnemanns
descriptions about the mode of allopathic practice that is with
mixtures, over dosage etc, of which Professor AF.Hecks was
important. Hahnernann gave a reply and published it in the name
of his son (pg-89)
CHAPTER 10
As Napoleon raised fortresses in Torgue, Hahnemann decided
to leave the place. He moved to Leipziec again- the third
time(1811). First time was 36 years earlier(1775) as a 20 year
old student. Second time was 14 years later (1789) as Doctor and
head of a family, 34 years old and searching for knowledge. Now
at 56 much admired, not merely a learner hut pre-eminently a
teacher.
Fourth December 1811, Hahnemann wrote in Reichsanzeiger,” study
of Homoeopathy should not be theoretical but a practical
verification at the same time is necessary.
Hahnemann decided
to start a medical institute for graduate physicians to teach
Homoeopathy as a six months course .But nobody had applied and
the project failed.
He decided to give
up lectures in the Leipzeic University. For this he has to
obtain recognition from the upper chair of the University by
defending a dissertation- Disseratio Histerico medica de
Helleborisrmo Veterem” contain mainly historical, medical
provinces and a section of his Essay on a new principle for
ascertaining the curative power of drugs. It was a great
success. Hahnemann qualified and he started lectures in 1812
September 29th onwards. At first there was a full audience-
medical students, doctors, Professors etc. as his lectures were
mainly abuses against old school arid practitioners, audience
gradually began to shrink day by day until only a few were
remaining.
Hahnemann had not been able to gather any number of persons as
disciples through lectures so he formed a young school himself.
He finally
succeeded in this by two means.
1. He encouraged the closest personal intercourse between the
students, himself and his family.
2. He found a group of collaborators for proving drugs.
The selected
persons were invited into his family and so attached them to
himself in a personal and family way.
But soon , hatred and jealousy of the professors and students
were transferred to his pupils and gradually his students were
compelled to attend classes in old school medicine . So
}{Hahnemann decided to make them much more faithful through drug
proving.
Provers have to collect plants and prepare medicine themselves
Dr. Rieke, from Tubingen— The theory of medicinal diseases,
research as to the duration of the effects of every single
drug, the knowledge of the specifically verified primary and
secondary effects etc are the unique features of Homoeopathy.
Prof. Jon — formerly an opponent of Hahnemann later conducted
drug proving and published his results Material for further
therapeutics, obtained and collected from experiments on healthy
subjects in 1825
At the same time Hahnemann became more and more popular as a
physician especially through the treatment of Typhoid fever -
published as” Treatment of Typhus fever at present , prevailing
“(1814).
Among the diseases , in which Hahnemann made good results were
drug maladies because he was sure about its antidotes.
Hahnemann published all his proving works as Materia medica pura’
in 6 parts during the period 1811 to 1821. Hahnemann included at
the beginning of the book , from second edition onwards, an
essay - ‘Spirit of the new doctrine of Healing’. It contains
descriptions about different modes of treatment . He says
“Living organisms are less affected by natural diseases than by
the drugs. So the latter extinguishes the former provided it is
similar .Since the organism is already stimulated by the
disease, only small doses of the drug are necessary to do this.
Large doses will replace the malady with a complicated medicinal
malady.
Hahnemann published these ideas in “Allz - Anz .d. Deutshen” -
1813.
CHAPTER 11.
Literary feud with Professor Dzondi.
According to Dr.Dzondi, cold water should be applied to the burnt
part for a speedy cure .But according to Hahnemann warm water
should be applied.
Eg.l.In the case of burns a cook never uses cold water.Instead
of that he holds his burnt part near to the glow of hot coals.
Eg.2 Varnishers and artisans are also doing the same.
In this connection he refers to Heister and Benjamin Bell.Dr
challenged Hahnemann in this respect but he did not accept it.
Dr. Pauchelt’s criticism:
1. Hahnemann disrespect towards his colleagues and other
systems.
2. Favours Hahnemanns theories.
3. Old school treatment is not so bad as described by Hahnemann.
4. Homeopathy has to go hand in hand with allied sciences.
Complaints against
Hahnemann by the apothecaries regarding self dispensing of
medicines.
Council of the town f Leipzig paseed senence t in favour of
apothecaries .But government(Saxon) gave some privi1age for
Hahnemann.
Treatment of Prince Schwarzenberg for attacks of strokes and
paralysis-at first responded but finally succumbed.
Finally there was the public attack of 13 colleagues in a daily
paper .Hahnemann felt himself to be almost excluded from the
place of his former activities. So he once more resolved upon
migration.
CHAPTER. 12.
Hahnemann removed to Koethen settled down at last inspite of
continuous attacks-his home-happy family life daily work-the
question of fees.
Hahnemann decided to leave Leipzig because of the continuous
opposition towards his system and the governmental decree about
self-dispensing.Hahnernann left Leipzic with 11 wagon loads of
goods and cattle. Hahnemann says that his practice at Leipzig
enabled him to save so much for his eight heirs enough for each
of them to live on the interest without working.
He decided to
settle down at Koethen. It, is because of three reasons.
1 .Governor Von Sternegg at the court of Koethen had been cured
by him.
2. Duke himself was under his treatment.
3 .Duke was a Freemason.
Hahnemann left
Leipzic (for ever) in June 1821.He had settled in Kothern where
he got the right to prepare medicine and to dispense medicine by
himself. Heynel and Mossdorf were two students who left Leipzic
with Hahnernann , of which Mossdorf later became his son in law
. Hahnernann was elected as Privy Councilor in the following
May. Duke also ordered that an account of Hahnemann recoveries
should be published in Koethen newspaper .At this period
Hahnemann did not involve in any of the disputes. All were
settled by his disciples-Dr.Stapf etc. In 1822 Stapf had
published the first periodical of Homoeopathy, the ‘Archive for
the Homoeopathic science of healing’.
In 1826
Dr.C.Wilhelm Hufeland sets down the following points against
Homoeopathy.
1. Homoeopathic system rests on a symptomatic type of cure and
may suppress the causal method.
2. Homoeopathy should give much more importance to the study of
medicine.
3. Homoeopathy would create sins of omission’-(phlebotomy,emetics..
.)
4.Homoeopathy stands for self dispensing of medicine which is
against the fundamental laws of every good medical practice.
Hufeland states the advantages of homoeopathy as follows.
1. It will affect attention to individualisation
2.It will help to bring dietetics back to its own.
3.It will prohibit large doses of medicine.
4.It will lead to simplification of prescription
5.It will lead to testing of medicines on living subjects.
6.It will direct attention more to the preparation of medicines
and bring about a stricter supervision of the apothecaries.
7.It will never do positive injury.
8.It will give the sick organism more time for quiet and
undisturbed self - help.
9.It will lessen the cost of curing to an extraordinary extent.
CHRONIC MIASM “ – Hahnemann’s last work of fundamental
importance (1828)--The Psora Theory.
1st edition — 1828.
2nd edition 1835—1839.
Origin of PSORA THEORY.
Homeopathic drugs are more certain, more convenient and less
harmful than Allopathy for acute diseases, epidemic diseases,
sporadic fevers and venereal diseases. But certain chronic
disease of venereal origin otherwise could be alleviated by
Homoeopathic remedies but not completely cured. Special
conditions such as serious dietary mistakes, cold , wet and
stormy weather, temperamental influences etc caused the
apparently rectified troubles to appear again frequently with
new and stubborn symptoms. New remedies chosen in the best and
most careful way, were of no use . In short, the chronic malady
was never eradicated , but because worse from year to year often
with most varied external symptoms.
At first it was
thought that the reason for failure of the Homoeopathic
treatment might be found in the insufficient number of proved
drugs. But on further investigation Hahnemann came to the
conclusion that in the chronic diseases one has always to deal
with a segregated part of a deeper lying original evil , the
large extent of which is shown by new symptoms arising from time
to time. The original evil must also be of a miasmatically
chronic nature -- because it could not be eradicated by the mere
vigour of a robust constitution, neither could it be overcome by
the healthiest diet and order of life but in the course of years
it grew worse , with the addition of other more serious
symptoms- right up to the end of life.
Hahnemann on
further verification came to the conclusion that sub chronic
maladies had some connection with a previous outbreak of psora.
Itch - a skin disease , caused by the itch insect was common in
those days. External application with ointments, salves etc
expelled very quickly the external symptoms, but is followed by
a large number of disorders like epilepsy, paralysis, ulcers ,
tumors etc. Two decades before the appearance Chronic diseases ,
Autenrieth.
